
Finger Lakes Organic Growers‚ Cooperative (FLO) was
established
in 1986. It is a not-for profit organization with 24
members.
The co-op sells organically grown produce throughout New York
State.
Currently, there are about 10 farms from Upstate New York which are
active
members.
Finger Lakes Organic Growers Cooperative markets the
produce of 16 area
farmers to customers throughout New York State.
The Co-op makes deliveries twice a week in the Ithaca
area, to NYC and
Syracuse once a week, and to Rochester/Buffalo and
North
Country on
alternate weeks. Customers may also pick up their
orders at the FLO
office in Ithaca. Inquiries may be emailed to

Goals of the Project. Major responsibilities/expectations:
Cooperative Extension and the Finger Lakes Organic Growers Cooperative
is
seeking a student to assist with implementation of a grant-funded
project
to
improve business operations and marketing activities of the
cooperative.
Specific activities to be undertaken include the following three
options:
Note: it is not expected that a student would take on all three
of these
projects but would pick one which most closely matches his/her
experience
and
interests.
) assist with the updating of computerized records - the business is
planning
to replace outdated computers and transfer business records over to
new
software
) assist with development of internet access for email and web
access;
and
update current website, find a host server and register itís
own site to be
used for business transactions
) assist with the development of new marketing materials appropriate
to two
new target markets: a) local consumers who might be
interested
in a weekly
produce box delivery scheme and b) Finger Lakes area restaurants who
are
interested in buying local
Finger Lakes Organic Growers Cooperative, established in 1986, has
18
grower
members from throughout central New York. All are certified
organic
by
NOFA-NY, Demeter, and OCIA. The Cooperative sells 35% of its
produce in the
Ithaca area, Rochester, Buffalo, Syracuse, Northern NY and 65% of the
produce
goes to NYC. They are interested in strengthening local/regional
marketing
opportunities to reduce delivery costs.
Background suitable for the position:
-excellent knowledge of computer hardware set-up and software
applications
-proven experience with spreadsheets, databases, accounting programs,
website
development, publishing programs or graphics
-creative marketing instincts
-desire for real world business operations experience
-interest in agricultural marketing and cooperative operations
-business management and communications courses
Working Environment: FLO operates out of a
barn/office/storage
facility at
CRS Growers Farm, 2622 N. Triphammer Rd. Ithaca. Student
must be willing to work in
slightly uncomfortable conditions (not real warm, lots of boxes all
around,
dirt). Casual working clothes are a must!
